Movie blogs are enraged that Padmé wants to save her husband instead of killing him

Digital Spy recently uncovered a lecture given by concept artist Iain McCaig (who worked on Episodes I, II, III and VII) at the Academy of Art University last year. Among other things, McCaig expressed his disappointment about the removal of an idea for the Mustafar events in Revenge of the Sith :

“At the end, on Mustafar, when [Padmé] goes to see [Anakin], she has a knife in her hands. She gets off the ship with the knife, she runs up and throws her arms around him, and he lets her. She’s got the knife to the back of [Anakin’s] neck and she’s going to kill him. [Again], he lets her. But she can’t do it. She loves him too much to stop him, even when he becomes the monster.”

Naturally, Digital Spy and many other movie blogs jumped at this new chance to attack one of the Star Wars Prequels. They claim that Padmé would have been such a “badass” in this alternate scene, and that George Lucas weakened the character by making her reason with her husband.

But don’t count on these so-called movie experts to remember that redemption by family love is at the heart of the Star Wars saga. At the end of Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker doesn’t win by being “badass” and killing his father. He actually wins by completing what his mother started decades ago; to awaken Anakin’s good side.

According to movie bloggers’ standards, I guess we can now call Luke a pussy.
