Star Wars: The Last Jedi actress Kelly Marie Tran reportedly deleted her Instagram posts because of fan harassment. Many film journalists and bloggers are now loudly supporting her. Tran shouldn’t trust them too much, though. They can be much more insensitive if it’s about a part they don’t like.
In January 1999, Newsweek published an article titled “Buzz Wars, Episode One: The Backlash Menace.” It stated:
“Insiders call 9-year-old Jake Lloyd (who plays Anakin Skywalker) ‘Mannequin Skywalker’ – word is he stinks.”
It was only the beginning of the bashing of Anakin and the very young actor who played him. It could be one of the reasons Lloyd ended up so badly.
Now Newsweek joins the chorus of indignation against Tran’s harassers, without acknowledging that the press fueled the anger of Star Wars fans for many years. But it was aimed at the the prequels, which the film journalists didn’t like, so they didn’t care about any excess.
